Accountant cover letter example & template

An accountant cover letter for a senior general ledger role. It states the license up front, then proves close and audit skill with specifics a controller can check in a reference call.

  • CPA license and years of GL ownership appear in the first paragraph.
  • One close-cycle improvement is explained step by step, not just claimed.
  • Shows judgment by describing an error caught before it reached the financials.

Re: Senior Accountant, General Ledger
Dear Hiring Manager,

Your Senior Accountant posting asks for a licensed CPA who can own a set of balance sheet accounts through close and audit with little supervision. I'm a Texas CPA, and for the past five years I've owned GL accounts carrying about $40M in balances at Texas Instruments.

The work I'm proudest of is our close. When I joined, the team closed in eight business days, mostly because bank and intercompany reconciliations were done by hand in Excel after the books were nearly final. I set up automated matching rules in NetSuite for the high-volume accounts, moved the manual reviews earlier in the calendar, and we now close in five. Those accounts have come through three annual audits with no adjustments.

I also built the variance templates our FP&A partners use during review. Last year one of them flagged a customer billing error of about $220K before quarter-end, which we corrected before the numbers went out. Earlier, at Deloitte, I prepared journal entries, reconciliations and audit workpapers for twelve mid-market clients, which gave me a feel for how auditors read support and what makes them come back with questions.

I'd be glad to talk about how I'd approach your close calendar. I'm also working toward the CMA and can share where I am in that process. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Emily Carter

How to write an accountant cover letter

What the people reading these letters look for, and what makes them stop.

What controllers look for first

Accounting managers screen for licensure and ownership before anything else. Say whether you're a CPA (and in which state), CPA-eligible, or a candidate with sections passed, in the first paragraph. Then tell them what you own: which accounts, what balance range, and whether you close them without a reviewer redoing your work. Controllers hiring for general ledger roles care most about a reliable close, so a concrete example of shortening it or reducing late adjustments is usually the strongest opening proof.

Terms and evidence that match accounting postings

Use the posting's vocabulary where it matches your experience: GAAP, month-end close, account reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, variance analysis, SOX controls, audit support. Name your ERP (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Workday Financials) because many teams filter on it, and say if you've done a system conversion. Good evidence includes days cut from the close, audit results ("no adjustments across three audits"), errors caught before reporting, and number of entities or clients handled. Describe how you did it in a sentence; a controller wants to know you'll know where to look.

Common mistakes on accounting cover letters

Avoid claiming accuracy in general terms; show one catch instead. Don't overstate your license status. If you've passed three sections, say three, because it will be verified. Public accounting candidates moving to industry should explain what they want from the switch in one plain sentence, since hiring managers worry about busy-season burnout and quick exits. Keep dollar figures consistent with your resume, and leave out confidential client names or figures from audit work. A single typo in a number undermines the whole letter, so proofread the digits.

Accountant cover letter FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a accountant cover letter include?

A strong accountant cover letter opens with a specific hook tied to the role and company, proves your fit in one or two middle paragraphs with concrete, quantified examples, and closes with genuine interest and a clear next step. The example above shows that structure end to end.

How do I make a accountant cover letter stand out?

Skip the generic opening and lead with something specific: a result you're proud of or a reason this company in particular. Back every claim with a number or a concrete example, and mirror the language of the job posting so it reads as tailored, not templated.

How long should a accountant cover letter be?

Keep it to three or four short paragraphs on a single page, roughly 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so be specific and stop once you've made your case.

Can I tailor this accountant cover letter to a specific job?

Yes. Create a free account, edit any section, switch the style and accent colour, and let Lucipath draft a version tailored to a specific posting from your profile and then download it as a PDF.
