Bank Teller cover letter example & template

An entry-level teller cover letter to a credit union. It is short and specific about balancing, transaction volume and a fraud catch, and it names a language skill the branch's members need.

  • Opens on a real connection to the credit union's members, not on a wish to work in banking.
  • Proof matches what branch managers track: balancing, volume, referrals and fraud awareness.
  • Modest, accurate numbers that fit an entry-level teller with under two years in the role.

Re: Teller
Dear Hiring Manager,

Many of the customers I help at my window each week are Hmong-speaking families from the East Side who also hold accounts at Affinity Plus. Several have told me they would bank in one place if someone there could explain a check hold or a CD in Hmong. I would like to be that person at your branch.

I have been a teller at Midway Community Bank since January 2025. On a normal day I handle about 110 lobby and drive-up transactions, and I balanced within tolerance on every shift last year. The three small variances I had were each under $10 and traced before close. I file CTRs on cash over $10,000 and bring anything that looks like structuring to our BSA officer. Last spring I stopped a $2,400 altered payroll check after the ID didn't match and the payee line looked altered; my manager confirmed it was fraud.

I also referred 64 customers to our personal bankers in 2025, and 23 of them opened a CD, HELOC or business account. Before banking I worked the service desk at Cub Foods for two years, where I sold money orders, cashed payroll checks and counted down the registers at close. I am also a Minnesota notary.

I would welcome a chance to talk about the opening, and I am available for an interview on any weekday afternoon.

Sincerely,
Mai Lor

How to write a bank teller cover letter

What the people reading these letters look for, and what makes them stop.

What to lead with in a teller cover letter

Branch managers hire tellers for accuracy and for how customers feel at the window. Open with something specific to that branch or credit union: its members, its neighborhood, a language its customers speak, or the hours and drive-up volume in the posting. If you have no teller experience yet, lead with your strongest cash handling job and the volume you handled there. A credit union reader will also notice whether you say members instead of customers.

Proof to include

Pick the evidence a teller supervisor checks: how often your drawer balanced, how many transactions you handle on a normal day, referrals that turned into accounts, and one example of catching fraud or following a compliance rule such as a CTR or an ID check. Keep numbers modest and exact. Retail, grocery service desk, cashier and restaurant jobs all count as cash handling experience, and a notary commission or a second language is worth a sentence.

What to leave out

Leave out long explanations of why you want a career in finance, since the manager is filling a window, not a management trainee role. Do not claim sales totals you cannot back up or describe approving loans. Avoid sharing any customer detail from a fraud case beyond the basic facts. And keep it under a page: three or four short paragraphs are plenty for an entry-level teller application.

Bank Teller cover letter FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a bank teller cover letter include?

A strong bank teller cover letter opens with a specific hook tied to the role and company, proves your fit in one or two middle paragraphs with concrete, quantified examples, and closes with genuine interest and a clear next step. The example above shows that structure end to end.

How do I make a bank teller cover letter stand out?

Skip the generic opening and lead with something specific: a result you're proud of or a reason this company in particular. Back every claim with a number or a concrete example, and mirror the language of the job posting so it reads as tailored, not templated.

How long should a bank teller cover letter be?

Keep it to three or four short paragraphs on a single page, roughly 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so be specific and stop once you've made your case.

Can I tailor this bank teller cover letter to a specific job?

Yes. Create a free account, edit any section, switch the style and accent colour, and let Lucipath draft a version tailored to a specific posting from your profile and then download it as a PDF.
