Certified Nursing Assistant cover letter example & template

A certified nursing assistant cover letter for a memory care role that shows how the aide works with residents with dementia and how she reports changes, in plain words a director of nursing will trust.

  • Opens with a clear reason for wanting this unit and this shift.
  • Describes dementia care in specific habits instead of general kindness.
  • Ends with an offer of a working interview, common in long-term care hiring.

Re: Certified Nursing Assistant, Memory Care (Day Shift)
Dear Hiring Manager,

Your opening for a day-shift CNA in memory care is the kind of work I keep asking for more of. For almost two years I have been a certified nursing assistant at Parkway Health and Rehabilitation in Memphis, caring for 10 to 12 long-term residents a shift and picking up extra shifts on our 18-bed secured memory care unit.

Memory care has taught me to slow down. Many of our residents do better with the same aide at the same time each morning, a quiet explanation before every step, and a second try ten minutes later instead of a rushed bath. After finishing the CMS Hand in Hand training I started keeping notes on what works for each resident, like who likes music during care and who needs to be approached from the front, and I pass those along at shift change.

I also watch for small changes. Last winter one of my residents was more confused than usual and barely drinking. I filled out a Stop and Watch form and told the charge nurse, and she was treated for a urinary tract infection early. I chart every ADL in PointClickCare before I leave, and I am comfortable with Hoyer and sit-to-stand lifts.

My Tennessee Nurse Aide Registry status is active and my BLS is current. I would be glad to come in for a working interview on your memory care unit. You can reach me at (901) 555-0127.

Thank you,
Aaliyah Grant, CNA

How to write a certified nursing assistant cover letter

What the people reading these letters look for, and what makes them stop.

What to lead with in a CNA cover letter

Open with the unit and shift you are applying for and what you do now that matches it: your setting, how many residents you care for, and how long you have been certified. If you are new, lead with your state-approved training, your clinical hours, and any caregiving you have done at home or through an agency. Directors of nursing read quickly, so the first paragraph should show you can take an assignment.

Proof that makes a CNA letter credible

Pick one or two real examples. A change in condition you noticed and reported is the strongest, because it shows you are the nurse's eyes on the floor. For memory care, describe the specific habits you use with residents who have dementia. Name your charting system and the lifts you are trained on, and close with your state registry status and BLS.

What to leave out

Do not mention giving medications, doing wound treatments, or anything else outside CNA scope, even if you watched a nurse do it. Skip long explanations of why you want to go into healthcare and any mention of past employers in a negative way. Leave pay and shift differentials for the interview, and keep the letter to four short paragraphs.

Certified Nursing Assistant cover letter FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a certified nursing assistant cover letter include?

A strong certified nursing assistant cover letter opens with a specific hook tied to the role and company, proves your fit in one or two middle paragraphs with concrete, quantified examples, and closes with genuine interest and a clear next step. The example above shows that structure end to end.

How do I make a certified nursing assistant cover letter stand out?

Skip the generic opening and lead with something specific: a result you're proud of or a reason this company in particular. Back every claim with a number or a concrete example, and mirror the language of the job posting so it reads as tailored, not templated.

How long should a certified nursing assistant cover letter be?

Keep it to three or four short paragraphs on a single page, roughly 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so be specific and stop once you've made your case.

Can I tailor this certified nursing assistant cover letter to a specific job?

Yes. Create a free account, edit any section, switch the style and accent colour, and let Lucipath draft a version tailored to a specific posting from your profile and then download it as a PDF.
