Content Writer cover letter example & template

A content writer cover letter that reads the way good content should: plain, specific and easy to finish. It points to results and to published work rather than describing a love of writing.

  • The opening responds to the company's actual content, which shows the writer read it.
  • Results are given as signups and rankings, the numbers content teams track.
  • Short, clean sentences make the letter itself a convincing writing sample.

Re: Content Writer
Dear Ms. Brennan,

Most insurance writing assumes the reader already knows what a deductible is. The best pieces on Root's blog do not, and that is the kind of writing I have spent the last four years doing for small business owners who never planned to become payroll experts.

At Tallgrass Payroll I write six to eight long articles a month on payroll tax and compliance. Our in-house CPA checks every one before it runs, which taught me to be exact without being dense. My largest project was a payroll tax guide for every state plus DC. It took most of a year and now brings in about 310 trial signups a month. I also went back through 40 older posts that had stopped earning traffic, rewrote them around what people were actually searching for, and moved 26 of them into the top five results.

Before Tallgrass I was a business reporter at Columbus Business Weekly. The newsroom gave me habits I still rely on: call the source, confirm the number, and write the sentence a busy reader can understand the first time. Those habits seem to fit a company that has to explain insurance to people who would rather be doing almost anything else.

My clips are at graceadeyemi.com, including two of the state guides and a customer case study. I would be glad to take on a short paid test piece if that is part of your process.

Sincerely,
Grace Adeyemi

How to write a content writer cover letter

What the people reading these letters look for, and what makes them stop.

What to lead with in a content writer cover letter

Your cover letter is the first writing sample the editor reads, so the opening has to earn the second sentence. Start with something you noticed about the company's own content: a gap, a strength, the audience it serves. That shows you read their work, which is what they will ask you to do every day. Avoid opening with how long you have loved writing. Editors hear it from nearly every applicant, and it says nothing about what you can publish.

The proof editors look for

Editors want evidence of three things: that you can write accurately about a subject, that your work performs, and that you can take an edit. Give one or two results in the terms content teams track, such as signups, rankings or organic traffic, and say what you did to get them. Mention who reviewed your work (an editor, a subject expert, legal) if that applies. Then link to specific clips and name them, so the reader knows which ones to open first.

What to leave out

Cut adjectives about your own writing. Calling yourself a compelling storyteller invites the reader to check, and the letter will be judged on its sentences either way. Leave out a full list of tools, since the resume carries those. Keep it to about 300 words: a long cover letter from a writer suggests trouble with editing. Finally, proofread it aloud. A single typo in a content writer's letter usually ends the application.

Content Writer cover letter FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a content writer cover letter include?

A strong content writer cover letter opens with a specific hook tied to the role and company, proves your fit in one or two middle paragraphs with concrete, quantified examples, and closes with genuine interest and a clear next step. The example above shows that structure end to end.

How do I make a content writer cover letter stand out?

Skip the generic opening and lead with something specific: a result you're proud of or a reason this company in particular. Back every claim with a number or a concrete example, and mirror the language of the job posting so it reads as tailored, not templated.

How long should a content writer cover letter be?

Keep it to three or four short paragraphs on a single page, roughly 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so be specific and stop once you've made your case.

Can I tailor this content writer cover letter to a specific job?

Yes. Create a free account, edit any section, switch the style and accent colour, and let Lucipath draft a version tailored to a specific posting from your profile and then download it as a PDF.
