Dental Hygienist cover letter example & template

A dental hygienist cover letter to a private practice with a growing periodontal maintenance schedule. It shows the dentist that the hygienist can take on SRP and anesthesia and keep the day on time.

  • Opens with the practice's own need, stated in the posting, and answers it directly.
  • Quantifies schedule, SRP volume and treatment acceptance in the dentist's terms.
  • Keeps diagnosis with the dentist, which reads as professional and scope-aware.

Re: Dental Hygienist, 4 Days per Week
Dear Dr. Sorensen,

Your posting says the practice is adding a fourth hygiene day because the periodontal maintenance schedule has outgrown your current team. That is the part of hygiene I spend most of my week on, and I would like to help you build it.

At Park Dental I see 8 to 9 patients a day on a 60-minute schedule and complete about 12 scaling and root planing cases a month. I am certified in local anesthesia and nitrous oxide in Minnesota and give my own infiltrations and inferior alveolar blocks, so the dentist is not pulled out of a procedure to numb my patients. I chart six-point probing on every adult recare and new patient and flag bleeding sites and pockets of 5 mm or more for your exam.

I have also worked on how findings are presented. When I started showing patients their intraoral camera photos next to their charting, accepted SRP treatment plans in my column went from 48% to 63% over 2024. Before Park Dental I floated between three HealthPartners clinics, so I adjust quickly to a new office's software, sterilization flow and way of running the morning huddle. I have used both Dentrix and Eaglesoft.

I would be happy to come in for a working interview day so you can see my chairside and charting. My schedule is flexible for a Tuesday or Thursday.

Sincerely,
Hannah Vang, RDH

How to write a dental hygienist cover letter

What the people reading these letters look for, and what makes them stop.

What to lead with

Open with something about the practice: a new hygiene day, a periodontal focus, pediatric patients, or a move to a new office. Most hygiene hiring is done by the dentist or office manager, and they want to know whether you solve the problem that created the opening. If the posting mentions anesthesia or a specific schedule length, answer it in your first two paragraphs.

Proof to include

Give your daily patient count and appointment length, your SRP and periodontal maintenance volume, and whether you give your own anesthesia. Include the state license and any anesthesia or nitrous certification, since offices verify these before a working interview. One number on treatment acceptance or recare retention shows you understand the business side of hygiene without sounding like a salesperson.

What to leave out

Avoid language that suggests you diagnose or treatment plan on your own; say you assess, chart and present findings to the dentist. Skip long passages about loving smiles or patient comfort that any applicant could write. Leave salary and benefit requests for the interview unless the posting asks, and do not list every CE course, only the ones that match the role.

Dental Hygienist cover letter FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a dental hygienist cover letter include?

A strong dental hygienist cover letter opens with a specific hook tied to the role and company, proves your fit in one or two middle paragraphs with concrete, quantified examples, and closes with genuine interest and a clear next step. The example above shows that structure end to end.

How do I make a dental hygienist cover letter stand out?

Skip the generic opening and lead with something specific: a result you're proud of or a reason this company in particular. Back every claim with a number or a concrete example, and mirror the language of the job posting so it reads as tailored, not templated.

How long should a dental hygienist cover letter be?

Keep it to three or four short paragraphs on a single page, roughly 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so be specific and stop once you've made your case.

Can I tailor this dental hygienist cover letter to a specific job?

Yes. Create a free account, edit any section, switch the style and accent colour, and let Lucipath draft a version tailored to a specific posting from your profile and then download it as a PDF.
