Electrician cover letter example & template

A plain, direct cover letter from a Texas journeyman electrician applying for a lead role with a commercial contractor. It names the work, the gear and the inspection record, then asks for a site visit.

  • Opens with the contractor's current type of work and how his experience matches it.
  • Proof is concrete: service size, transformers, square footage and first-time inspection passes.
  • States the license and OSHA card in one line and keeps the tone of a conversation on site.

Re: Lead Journeyman Electrician
Dear Mr. Delgado,

Your posting mentions a run of medical office and school work in north Fort Worth, which is most of what I have built over the last six years. I am a Texas-licensed journeyman electrician, and I am looking for a lead role where I run the crew on a job from rough-in through final.

At Tarrant Commercial Electric I set and terminated a 1,200 amp 480Y/277V service with six panelboards and two 75 kVA transformers for a three-story medical office building. I ran the EMT and rigid feeders on a 186,000 square foot tilt-wall warehouse and wired a 38-classroom school renovation with nLight controls during summer break, when the schedule had no slack. On my jobs in 2024 and 2025 we passed 41 of 43 City of Fort Worth inspections the first time.

For most of that time I have run two apprentices. I lay out the day, check their conduit and box fill against the NEC 2023 tables, and have them do the bends while I watch rather than doing it for them. I came up through the IEC Fort Worth/Tarrant County program myself and know what a good journeyman did for me.

I hold a TDLR journeyman license and OSHA 30, and I can start with two weeks notice. I would be glad to walk one of your current sites with you or your superintendent and talk through how you run your crews.

Sincerely,
Tyler Brandt

How to write an electrician cover letter

What the people reading these letters look for, and what makes them stop.

What to lead with in an electrician cover letter

Contractors hire electricians for a type of work, so open by matching yours to theirs: residential service, commercial new construction, tenant finish-out, industrial maintenance. Say your license level and state in the first paragraph. If you are applying for a lead or foreman role, say so and what you want to run. Superintendents read these quickly, often on a phone at a job site, so a short letter in plain language works best.

Proof a contractor wants to see

Give two or three jobs with the size of the work: service amperage and voltage, transformer kVA, square footage, fixture or unit counts. First-time inspection results are strong proof because failed inspections cost a contractor time and money. If you have run apprentices, say how many and how you check their work. Name your apprenticeship program, your NEC edition, and safety training such as OSHA 30 or NFPA 70E. A start date shows you are serious.

What to leave out

Skip general lines about loving the trade or being a problem solver. Contractors want facts they can check. Do not overstate scope by claiming industrial or high-voltage work you only saw from across the site, because the superintendent will ask about it on day one. Leave out pay demands and complaints about a past contractor. Keep it under a page and end by offering to meet on a job site or at the shop.

Electrician cover letter FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a electrician cover letter include?

A strong electrician cover letter opens with a specific hook tied to the role and company, proves your fit in one or two middle paragraphs with concrete, quantified examples, and closes with genuine interest and a clear next step. The example above shows that structure end to end.

How do I make a electrician cover letter stand out?

Skip the generic opening and lead with something specific: a result you're proud of or a reason this company in particular. Back every claim with a number or a concrete example, and mirror the language of the job posting so it reads as tailored, not templated.

How long should a electrician cover letter be?

Keep it to three or four short paragraphs on a single page, roughly 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so be specific and stop once you've made your case.

Can I tailor this electrician cover letter to a specific job?

Yes. Create a free account, edit any section, switch the style and accent colour, and let Lucipath draft a version tailored to a specific posting from your profile and then download it as a PDF.
