Logistics Coordinator cover letter example & template

A logistics coordinator cover letter written for a shipper's transportation team. It leads with the freight mix in the posting and backs it up with on-time and cost numbers a transportation manager can check in an interview.

  • Matches the modes and volume in the posting to the writer's daily load count.
  • Gives one on-time result and one cost result, each with how it was achieved.
  • Mentions brokerage experience as a reason he understands carriers, not as filler.

Re: Logistics Coordinator, Outbound Transportation
Dear Hiring Manager,

Your posting describes an outbound desk moving a mix of LTL and truckload out of Memphis-area facilities, with the coordinator owning carrier performance reporting. I book 35 to 50 of those loads a day at Tri-State Home Furnishings, and the carrier scorecard I built there is the part of my job I would most like to keep doing.

When I started, our on-time delivery was 91.4%. I began scoring our 40 routing guide carriers every month on pickup, delivery and tender acceptance, shared the results with each carrier's rep, and moved two lanes that kept running late. We finished last quarter at 96.8%. On the cost side, I audit every invoice against the rate confirmation. That caught $62,400 in 2025 in duplicate accessorials and wrong freight classes, and setting dock appointments in our WMS brought detention from about $4,100 a month to $1,300.

Before Tri-State I spent almost three years covering loads at a brokerage, so I know what a carrier needs from a shipper to say yes to a tender: accurate weights, realistic appointment times and quick answers when something goes wrong. I passed the ASCM CLTD exam last year and use MercuryGate daily, so I expect your TMS will be quick to learn.

I would welcome a chance to talk through how I set up the scorecard. I can send a blank copy of the template ahead of time if that would help.

Sincerely,
Terrence Boyd

How to write a logistics coordinator cover letter

What the people reading these letters look for, and what makes them stop.

What to lead with in a logistics coordinator cover letter

Start with the freight in the posting: the modes, the volume and whether the role is inbound, outbound or import. Then match it to what you move now. Transportation managers hire for fit with their lanes and systems, so one sentence saying you book a similar mix at a similar volume does more than any statement about being organized. If the posting names a TMS or a customer SLA, answer it directly in the first paragraph.

Proof that makes the letter credible

Give one service result and one cost result, and say how you got each. An on-time percentage moving from 91.4% to 96.8% because you started scoring carriers is believable; 'improved efficiency' is not. Freight invoice recoveries, detention reduction and claims closed are all good cost evidence. If you have brokerage, dispatch or warehouse experience, use it to explain how you work with carriers or the dock, not as a separate career story.

What to leave out

Leave out the definition of logistics and any line about the supply chain being the backbone of the economy. The reader works in it. Don't list every system and freight term from your resume; name the TMS and move on. Avoid claiming work that belongs to someone else, such as filing customs entries if your broker did, or negotiating contract rates if procurement ran the bid. Keep it to one page.

Logistics Coordinator cover letter FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a logistics coordinator cover letter include?

A strong logistics coordinator cover letter opens with a specific hook tied to the role and company, proves your fit in one or two middle paragraphs with concrete, quantified examples, and closes with genuine interest and a clear next step. The example above shows that structure end to end.

How do I make a logistics coordinator cover letter stand out?

Skip the generic opening and lead with something specific: a result you're proud of or a reason this company in particular. Back every claim with a number or a concrete example, and mirror the language of the job posting so it reads as tailored, not templated.

How long should a logistics coordinator cover letter be?

Keep it to three or four short paragraphs on a single page, roughly 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so be specific and stop once you've made your case.

Can I tailor this logistics coordinator cover letter to a specific job?

Yes. Create a free account, edit any section, switch the style and accent colour, and let Lucipath draft a version tailored to a specific posting from your profile and then download it as a PDF.
