Physical Therapist cover letter example & template

An outpatient orthopedic physical therapist cover letter aimed at a sports medicine clinic. It leads with the ACL population the clinic treats and supports it with caseload and outcome data.

  • Connects the therapist's return-to-sport work to the clinic's athlete population.
  • Uses LEFS scores and visit volume as proof instead of general claims about care.
  • Mentions OCS and clinical instructor status, both common screening points.

Re: Physical Therapist, Outpatient Sports Medicine
Dear Hiring Manager,

Most of the ACL reconstruction patients I discharge are high school and college athletes, and several have come to me after surgery at Vanderbilt. Your posting for a sports medicine therapist who can own return-to-sport testing is the work I have been building toward for five years.

At Results Physiotherapy I treat 11 to 13 patients a day and carry a caseload of about 55, mostly post-op knee and shoulder, spine, and running injuries. With two local orthopedic surgeons I put together a return-to-sport battery that combines hop tests, handheld dynamometry and the ACL-RSI, so clearance decisions rest on numbers the surgeon and the athlete can both see. I track outcomes in WebPT, and my knee patients discharged in 2025 improved a median 24 points on the LEFS.

I earned the OCS in 2024 and have supervised two DPT students as an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor. My first two years were in acute care at TriStar Skyline, where I learned to screen carefully, and that habit carries into direct access evaluations; I referred three patients to physicians last year for red-flag findings.

I would welcome the chance to observe a clinic day or talk through how your team runs return-to-sport clearance with the surgeons.

Sincerely,
Marcus Whitfield, PT, DPT, OCS

How to write a physical therapist cover letter

What the people reading these letters look for, and what makes them stop.

What to lead with

Start with the patient population the clinic serves and your experience with it: post-op orthopedics, sports, spine, neuro, pediatrics or geriatrics. Directors hire for fit with their referral base, so show you already treat the patients who walk through their door. If the posting mentions a specific program, such as return-to-sport testing, a surgeon partnership or a residency, name it.

Proof to include

Give visits per day and caseload so the director knows you can carry their schedule. Back clinical quality with a validated outcome measure (LEFS, ODI, QuickDASH, Berg) and a real number. List your license, board certification from ABPTS, and any residency or clinical instructor credential. If you work under direct access, a short example of screening and referring out shows judgment that directors value.

What to leave out

Leave out the account of the injury that led you to physical therapy unless it is one sentence and relevant to the clinic. Avoid broad claims like "I provide evidence-based, patient-centered care," which every applicant writes. Do not list techniques you are not credentialed for in that state, and do not criticize productivity expectations at a current employer, even if they drove the move.

Physical Therapist cover letter FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a physical therapist cover letter include?

A strong physical therapist cover letter opens with a specific hook tied to the role and company, proves your fit in one or two middle paragraphs with concrete, quantified examples, and closes with genuine interest and a clear next step. The example above shows that structure end to end.

How do I make a physical therapist cover letter stand out?

Skip the generic opening and lead with something specific: a result you're proud of or a reason this company in particular. Back every claim with a number or a concrete example, and mirror the language of the job posting so it reads as tailored, not templated.

How long should a physical therapist cover letter be?

Keep it to three or four short paragraphs on a single page, roughly 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so be specific and stop once you've made your case.

Can I tailor this physical therapist cover letter to a specific job?

Yes. Create a free account, edit any section, switch the style and accent colour, and let Lucipath draft a version tailored to a specific posting from your profile and then download it as a PDF.
