Marketing & Sales

Sales Representative cover letter example & template

An outside sales cover letter from a foodservice territory rep applying to a larger distributor. It reads like a rep talking to a district sales manager: territory, margin and how accounts were won.

  • Opens by naming the territory the rep already competes in, which is what a district manager cares about.
  • Proof is in distribution terms: weekly gross profit, new street accounts, receivables.
  • Closes with a practical next step, a ride-along, instead of a generic request for an interview.

Re: Sales Consultant, Northland Territory
Dear Mr. Alvarez,

For five years I have competed with Sysco reps for the same independent kitchens north of the river, so I know which Northland accounts buy on price, which buy on service, and which have been waiting for someone to help them fix their food cost. Your opening for a Sales Consultant in that territory is the one role I would leave Heartland Fresh Foodservice for.

I run a territory of 68 restaurant, bar and catering accounts across Clay and Platte counties, about $4.3M in annual sales. Over the last three years I grew its weekly gross profit from $14,900 to $18,600, mostly by adding lines to accounts I already had rather than cutting price to win new ones. Last year I opened 17 new street accounts, including a six-unit taco group I moved over after walking the owner through cost per plate on his top ten items.

Before sales I spent almost four years as a kitchen manager at Westport Smokehouse, ordering from three distributors. That is why my calls usually start with a product cutting or a menu costing sheet instead of an order guide, and why 11 of my accounts switched to a portioned chicken program. I also watch credit closely; my past-due receivables have stayed under 2% of sales.

I would be glad to ride along with one of your consultants for a day or meet you at the Olathe office. My ServSafe Manager certification is current.

Thank you,
Garrett Lindqvist

How to write a sales representative cover letter

What the people reading these letters look for, and what makes them stop.

What to lead with in a sales rep cover letter

Sales managers hiring for a territory want to know whether you can bring or build business in it. Open with your knowledge of that market, the customers you already call on, or the product category you know, and say it in one or two sentences. If you are moving from a competitor, a customer-side job or a different industry, name the connection early so the manager does not have to guess why you applied.

Proof to include

State the size of your current book in accounts and dollars, then one growth figure in the metric your employer pays on, such as gross profit, case volume or quota attainment with the base shown. Add one short story about how you won or grew an account, because it shows your selling approach. In distribution and field sales, managers also care about collections and margin discipline, so a sentence on receivables or pricing can set you apart.

What to leave out

Cut vague energy words like hungry or competitive and let your numbers show it. Do not name your current customers or share their pricing; a manager will assume you would do the same with theirs. Avoid promising to bring your whole book with you, which can raise non-solicitation concerns and sounds unrealistic. Keep the letter to four short paragraphs and end with a practical next step such as a ride-along.

Sales Representative cover letter FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a sales representative cover letter include?

A strong sales representative cover letter opens with a specific hook tied to the role and company, proves your fit in one or two middle paragraphs with concrete, quantified examples, and closes with genuine interest and a clear next step. The example above shows that structure end to end.

How do I make a sales representative cover letter stand out?

Skip the generic opening and lead with something specific: a result you're proud of or a reason this company in particular. Back every claim with a number or a concrete example, and mirror the language of the job posting so it reads as tailored, not templated.

How long should a sales representative cover letter be?

Keep it to three or four short paragraphs on a single page, roughly 250 to 400 words. Hiring managers skim, so be specific and stop once you've made your case.

Can I tailor this sales representative cover letter to a specific job?

Yes. Create a free account, edit any section, switch the style and accent colour, and let Lucipath draft a version tailored to a specific posting from your profile and then download it as a PDF.
