  • ASE tests listed by code (A1 to A8, L1) with manufacturer level and years.
  • Names real diagnostic tools and engine, transmission and recall work instead of general repair claims.

How to write an automotive technician resume

What hiring teams in this field actually screen for, and the terms that get matched.

What service managers screen for

Service managers read a technician resume for production and quality. Production is flat-rate hours flagged per year or per week, ideally next to hours clocked so they can see efficiency. Quality is comebacks, meaning repeat repairs, and how many repair orders you handled. After that they want to know your level: express or maintenance, line tech, heavy line, or diagnostic. Say which work the shop sends you. Postings at dealerships also look for manufacturer training level and brand experience, which shortens the ramp-up time.

ASE codes, manufacturer levels and tools that get matched

List ASE certifications by test code and name: A1 Engine Repair through A8 Engine Performance, with Master status if you hold all eight, plus L1 Advanced Engine Performance if you have it. ASE certifications need recertifying every five years, so keep them current. Add manufacturer levels exactly as the brand names them, such as Toyota Certified, Expert or Master. Name the scan tools and software you use (GTS+, Techstream, a lab scope, Snap-on scanners) and systems postings mention: hybrid, ADAS calibration, network diagnostics. EPA Section 609 is required for A/C work.

Common mistakes on automotive technician resumes

The most common miss is a skills list of every system on a car with no proof you have worked on it. Pick the jobs you do most and name them with the engine, transmission or model. Other mistakes shop managers mention: leaving out hours flagged because it feels like bragging, listing expired ASE certifications, and omitting your tool set when a posting asks for one. Keep it plain and specific; a manager wants to picture which bay to put you in.

Automotive Technician resume FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should an automotive technician resume include?

A strong automotive technician resume opens with a concise professional summary, then work experience written as quantified, results-first bullets, followed by education, a skills section, and any certifications. The example above shows each section in order.

What skills should an automotive technician resume highlight?

Lead with the skills the job posting asks for. For an automotive technician, recruiters and ATS filters commonly look for Toyota GTS+ and Techstream, Toyota TIS, PicoScope lab scope, Wiring diagrams, CAN and AVC-LAN networks, and Toyota Hybrid System. Group them so they are easy to scan.

Is this automotive technician resume template ATS-friendly?

Yes. It uses a single-column structure, standard section headings, real text (no text trapped in images), and no tables or graphics that confuse applicant-tracking systems, so it parses cleanly while still looking polished.

How long should an automotive technician resume be?

One page is ideal for most automotive technicians. Use two pages only if you have ten or more years of directly relevant experience, then tune the text size and margins so it stays clean.
