How to write a data analyst resume

What hiring teams in this field actually screen for, and the terms that get matched.

What analytics hiring managers screen for

Analyst screens come down to two questions: can you get the data yourself, and can you change a decision with it. Show SQL depth explicitly rather than implying it, and pair every analysis with the action it triggered. Building a churn model is a weaker claim than building a churn model that redirected retention spend and cut monthly churn from 4.1% to 2.8%.

Terms and tooling that get matched

SQL is the single most filtered term in this field, so it should appear in context rather than as a lone chip in a skills list. Add the warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift), the BI layer (Tableau, Power BI, Looker) and the languages (Python, pandas, R, dbt). Statistical vocabulary such as A/B testing, cohort analysis, regression and forecasting maps to more senior postings.

Common mistakes on analytics resumes

Listing tools without outcomes is the most common failure. Analysts also tend to describe the deliverable, a dashboard or a report, rather than the decision it enabled. Do not overstate machine-learning experience if your day to day is reporting, because a technical screen will find the gap within minutes.

Data Analyst resume FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a data analyst resume include?

A strong data analyst resume opens with a concise professional summary, then work experience written as quantified, results-first bullets, followed by education, a skills section, and any certifications. The example above shows each section in order.

What skills should a data analyst resume highlight?

Lead with the skills the job posting asks for. For a data analyst, recruiters and ATS filters commonly look for SQL, dbt, BigQuery, Snowflake, Airflow, and Python (pandas). Group them so they are easy to scan.

Is this data analyst resume template ATS-friendly?

Yes. It uses a single-column structure, standard section headings, real text (no text trapped in images), and no tables or graphics that confuse applicant-tracking systems, so it parses cleanly while still looking polished.

How long should a data analyst resume be?

One page is ideal for most data analysts. Use two pages only if you have ten or more years of directly relevant experience, then tune the text size and margins so it stays clean.
