Financial Analyst resume example & template

A mid-level FP&A resume for a financial analyst at a manufacturer. Each bullet names the deliverable, who received it and what decision it changed, which is what finance managers look for first.

  • Recurring deliverables are named with their audience and deadline, like the variance package the CFO gets by workday 6.
  • Evidence is mixed: a caught $1.9M accrual error, a capex review of 14 projects, a forecast accuracy gain.
  • Planning tools and ERP are spelled the way postings list them: Workday Adaptive Planning, NetSuite, Power BI, SQL.

How to write a financial analyst resume

What hiring teams in this field actually screen for, and the terms that get matched.

What FP&A hiring managers screen for

Finance managers read an analyst resume for ownership of recurring work. They want to know which report or model is yours, who receives it, and how often: the monthly variance deck for the CFO, the annual budget for three plants, the weekly cash forecast. Then they look for judgment, meaning a time you questioned a number and were right. A bullet about catching an understated accrual or killing a weak capital project says more than a list of models you have built.

Tools and terms that get matched

Postings for FP&A analysts repeat the same vocabulary: budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, month-end close support, financial modeling, KPI reporting. Name your planning platform exactly (Workday Adaptive Planning, Anaplan, Oracle EPM), your ERP (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle), and your reporting tool (Power BI, Tableau). Excel is assumed, so name the functions that prove depth. If you have passed a CFA level or hold the FPAC from the Association for Financial Professionals, list it with the year.

Common mistakes on financial analyst resumes

The most common one is writing "prepared reports" or "supported planning" with no scale, cadence or audience. Next is a tools list with no evidence of the thinking behind it, since teams hire analysts to explain numbers, not just produce them. Avoid invented precision like 99.7% forecast accuracy; managers know forecasts are rarely that clean and will ask how you measured it. Keep dollar figures you could defend line by line in an interview.

Financial Analyst resume FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a financial analyst resume include?

A strong financial analyst resume opens with a concise professional summary, then work experience written as quantified, results-first bullets, followed by education, a skills section, and any certifications. The example above shows each section in order.

What skills should a financial analyst resume highlight?

Lead with the skills the job posting asks for. For a financial analyst, recruiters and ATS filters commonly look for Annual budget, Rolling forecast, Variance analysis, Standard cost, Capex review (NPV, IRR, payback), and 13-week cash forecast. Group them so they are easy to scan.

Is this financial analyst resume template ATS-friendly?

Yes. It uses a single-column structure, standard section headings, real text (no text trapped in images), and no tables or graphics that confuse applicant-tracking systems, so it parses cleanly while still looking polished.

How long should a financial analyst resume be?

One page is ideal for most financial analysts. Use two pages only if you have ten or more years of directly relevant experience, then tune the text size and margins so it stays clean.
