Mechanical Engineer resume example & template

A product design mechanical engineer resume at about seven years of experience, in industrial equipment. The bullets follow a part from model to production and show what the design change did to cost, stress or warranty returns.

  • Names the actual hardware: pump bearing frames, seal chambers, conveyor weldments.
  • Mixes analysis (FEA, tolerance stacks) with shop floor evidence like rework removed.
  • EIT status and CSWP listed where a licensure-minded manager expects them.

Summary

Mechanical engineer with 7 years designing industrial equipment, currently on centrifugal pumps and previously on custom conveyors. Takes parts from SolidWorks model through FEA, GD&T drawings and first production run, and works directly with foundries and machine shops on cost.

Experience

Mechanical Engineer II · Lakeshore Fluid SystemsApr 2022 – Present
Milwaukee, WI
  • Designed the bearing frame and seal chamber for a new end-suction pump family, taking 6 sizes from concept to production release in 14 months.
  • Ran SolidWorks Simulation on the bearing frame; a rib change cut peak stress enough to move from ductile to gray iron, saving $18 per casting.
  • Led DFMEA sessions with quality and manufacturing for 3 product launches and tracked 41 action items to closure in Windchill.
  • Built tolerance stack-ups per ASME Y14.5-2018 for the shaft and impeller fit, eliminating a second machining operation on every impeller.
  • Cut seal-leak warranty returns from 23 to 6 a year by redesigning the gland plate and adding a vent port.
Mechanical Engineer I · Menomonee Conveyor Co.Jun 2019 – Mar 2022
Milwaukee, WI
  • Produced detail and assembly drawings for custom conveyor systems, releasing about 300 drawings a year through SolidWorks PDM.
  • Sized motors, gearboxes, bearings and shafts for belt and roller conveyors carrying loads up to 2,000 lb.
  • Standardized 40 frame weldments into a configurable SolidWorks design table, cutting engineering hours on repeat orders by about a third.
  • Traveled to 9 customer plants for installation support, fixing belt tracking and chain wear problems on the floor.

How to write a mechanical engineer resume

What hiring teams in this field actually screen for, and the terms that get matched.

What mechanical engineering hiring managers screen for

Engineering managers want to see parts you designed that actually got built. Name the product, the component you owned and how far you took it: concept, prototype, release, production. Then show the reasoning. A good bullet states the problem, the analysis or test you ran, and what changed as a result, whether that was cost per part, weight, stress margin, scrap or warranty returns. Evidence of working with machinists, suppliers and quality teams carries real weight, because most design problems surface on the shop floor.

Tools, standards and credentials that get matched

Postings name a CAD package, so lead with the one you know deeply (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Inventor or CATIA) and the PDM or PLM system around it. Other common filters: GD&T and ASME Y14.5, tolerance stack-up analysis, FEA (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS), DFMEA, DFM/DFA, and processes such as casting, sheet metal, injection molding and CNC machining. List EIT status if you passed the NCEES FE exam, and a PE if you have one. The CSWP is a useful signal for SolidWorks-heavy roles.

Common mistakes on mechanical engineer resumes

The most common one is a single line listing seven CAD packages. Hiring managers read it as having opened all of them and mastered none. List the tools you would be comfortable using in a design review tomorrow. Second, bullets with no numbers at all: engineering is quantitative, and a resume without a load, tolerance, cost or count reads as if nothing measurable happened. Third, leaving out a portfolio link for design roles. Several managers say they will not read further without one.

Mechanical Engineer resume FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a mechanical engineer resume include?

A strong mechanical engineer resume opens with a concise professional summary, then work experience written as quantified, results-first bullets, followed by education, a skills section, and any certifications. The example above shows each section in order.

What skills should a mechanical engineer resume highlight?

Lead with the skills the job posting asks for. For a mechanical engineer, recruiters and ATS filters commonly look for SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM, Windchill, AutoCAD, SolidWorks Simulation (FEA), and Tolerance stack-up analysis. Group them so they are easy to scan.

Is this mechanical engineer resume template ATS-friendly?

Yes. It uses a single-column structure, standard section headings, real text (no text trapped in images), and no tables or graphics that confuse applicant-tracking systems, so it parses cleanly while still looking polished.

How long should a mechanical engineer resume be?

One page is ideal for most mechanical engineers. Use two pages only if you have ten or more years of directly relevant experience, then tune the text size and margins so it stays clean.
