Medical Assistant resume example & template

A certified medical assistant resume from a busy family medicine clinic. It shows the daily volume, clinical tasks and EHR work a practice manager checks first, all kept inside what a medical assistant is allowed to do.

  • CMA (AAMA) credential and BLS sit in the headline and certifications, where screeners look.
  • Bullets give patients roomed per day, draws per day and prior authorizations per month.
  • Every task stays in MA scope: providers interpret, diagnose and sign off; the MA prepares.

How to write a medical assistant resume

What hiring teams in this field actually screen for, and the terms that get matched.

What practice managers screen for

Medical assistant hiring moves fast, and the first pass is a checklist: are you certified, can you draw blood and give injections, and which EHR have you used. After that, managers look for volume and setting. Rooming 25 patients a day in family medicine is a different job from assisting in a dermatology procedure room, so name the specialty and the number of providers you supported. Bilingual skills matter in many markets; state the language and whether you can room a visit in it.

Credentials and terms that get matched

Write the credential exactly: CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT) or CCMA (NHA). Many health systems filter on one of these, and some only accept the first two. Add BLS from the American Heart Association. Then mirror posting vocabulary: rooming, vital signs, venipuncture, IM and subcutaneous injections, EKG, point-of-care testing, prior authorization, referrals and the EHR by name (Epic, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, NextGen). If you have run a vaccine program, name your state registry and VFC.

Common mistakes on medical assistant resumes

The biggest red flag is claiming work outside MA scope: triaging patients, assessing symptoms, interpreting EKGs or giving medications on your own judgment. Practice managers read that as either inflation or an unsafe prior employer. Describe what you prepared, performed on order or routed to the provider instead. Other misses: a generic skills list with no volumes, leaving out the certifying body, and burying phlebotomy or injection experience at the bottom when the posting lists it first.

Medical Assistant resume FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a medical assistant resume include?

A strong medical assistant resume opens with a concise professional summary, then work experience written as quantified, results-first bullets, followed by education, a skills section, and any certifications. The example above shows each section in order.

What skills should a medical assistant resume highlight?

Lead with the skills the job posting asks for. For a medical assistant, recruiters and ATS filters commonly look for Rooming and vitals, IM/SubQ/ID injections, Venipuncture, 12-lead EKG, Spirometry, and CLIA-waived testing. Group them so they are easy to scan.

Is this medical assistant resume template ATS-friendly?

Yes. It uses a single-column structure, standard section headings, real text (no text trapped in images), and no tables or graphics that confuse applicant-tracking systems, so it parses cleanly while still looking polished.

How long should a medical assistant resume be?

One page is ideal for most medical assistants. Use two pages only if you have ten or more years of directly relevant experience, then tune the text size and margins so it stays clean.
