How to write an electrician resume

What hiring teams in this field actually screen for, and the terms that get matched.

What electrical contractors screen for

A contractor or superintendent reads an electrician resume for three things: license, scope and whether your work passes inspection. Say whether you work residential, commercial or industrial, and name the building types and system voltages. List the size of what you installed: service amperage, transformer kVA, square footage, fixture counts, unit counts. Say if you ran a crew and how many apprentices. First-time inspection results are rare on resumes and they answer the question every foreman has about a new hire.

Licenses, code and safety cards that get matched

Write your license the way the state issues it, for example Texas Journeyman Electrician License through TDLR, with the year. Name the NEC edition your state enforces; Texas exams currently use NEC 2023. Include apprenticeship hours and the program, since most states require around 8,000 documented hours for journeyman. Postings commonly ask for OSHA 10 or OSHA 30, NFPA 70E training and aerial lift certification. Use the posting's words for methods and materials: EMT, rigid, PVC, MC cable, cable tray, conduit bending, switchgear, panel terminations, troubleshooting.

Common mistakes on electrician resumes

The biggest miss is a resume that says installed and maintained electrical systems and nothing more. That fits every electrician in the state. Name the job and the gear. Other mistakes contractors point out: leaving off the license number or state, listing every tool ever handled instead of the ones that set you apart, and mixing residential and industrial claims without saying which you did more of. Keep it to one page and plain language; the trade values clear facts over polish.

Electrician resume FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should an electrician resume include?

A strong electrician resume opens with a concise professional summary, then work experience written as quantified, results-first bullets, followed by education, a skills section, and any certifications. The example above shows each section in order.

What skills should an electrician resume highlight?

Lead with the skills the job posting asks for. For an electrician, recruiters and ATS filters commonly look for NEC 2023, Article 220 load calculations, Article 250 grounding and bonding, Chapter 9 conduit fill, Blueprint and one-line reading, and EMT, rigid and PVC. Group them so they are easy to scan.

Is this electrician resume template ATS-friendly?

Yes. It uses a single-column structure, standard section headings, real text (no text trapped in images), and no tables or graphics that confuse applicant-tracking systems, so it parses cleanly while still looking polished.

How long should an electrician resume be?

One page is ideal for most electricians. Use two pages only if you have ten or more years of directly relevant experience, then tune the text size and margins so it stays clean.
