Nurse Practitioner resume example & template

A family nurse practitioner resume that reads like a provider's, not a nurse's: panel size, patients per day, quality measures moved, and prescribing credentials listed plainly.

  • Panel size and daily visit volume let a medical director gauge readiness in seconds.
  • Quality results use the measures health centers actually report, like A1c control and UDS screening rates.
  • Board certification, APRN license, and DEA registration are grouped for credentialing.

How to write a nurse practitioner resume

What hiring teams in this field actually screen for, and the terms that get matched.

What NP hiring managers screen for

Medical directors and practice administrators read an NP resume for evidence that you already function as a provider. Give panel size, patients per day, age range, and payer mix, and name the setting: FQHC, private primary care, urgent care, or a specialty clinic. Then show the clinical outcomes you own, such as A1c or blood pressure control and screening rates, since those are what the practice is paid and graded on. Prior RN years count, but keep them short and let them support the provider story.

Credentials and terms that get matched

Credentialing teams need exact names: your population focus certification (FNP-BC from ANCC or FNP-C from the AANP Certification Board), your state APRN license, DEA registration with schedules, and your underlying RN license. Mention your state PDMP and EPCS if you prescribe controlled substances. Postings also filter on the EHR (Epic, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, NextGen) and on phrases like chronic disease management, differential diagnosis, prescriptive authority, and HEDIS or UDS measures.

Common mistakes on NP resumes

The most common one is an NP resume written in RN language: administered, monitored, assisted. Providers assess, diagnose, order, prescribe, and manage. Another is leaving out volume, which makes a reviewer assume it was low. Do not list every clinical rotation from school once you have practiced for a year or more, and do not blur which state you are licensed in, because practice authority differs by state and the recruiter will check.

Nurse Practitioner resume FAQ

Quick answers before you start writing.

What should a nurse practitioner resume include?

A strong nurse practitioner resume opens with a concise professional summary, then work experience written as quantified, results-first bullets, followed by education, a skills section, and any certifications. The example above shows each section in order.

What skills should a nurse practitioner resume highlight?

Lead with the skills the job posting asks for. For a nurse practitioner, recruiters and ATS filters commonly look for Chronic disease management (diabetes, hypertension, COPD), Differential diagnosis, Well-child and sports physicals, Contraception and women's health, Buprenorphine treatment for OUD, and Minor procedures (laceration repair, I&D). Group them so they are easy to scan.

Is this nurse practitioner resume template ATS-friendly?

Yes. It uses a single-column structure, standard section headings, real text (no text trapped in images), and no tables or graphics that confuse applicant-tracking systems, so it parses cleanly while still looking polished.

How long should a nurse practitioner resume be?

One page is ideal for most nurse practitioners. Use two pages only if you have ten or more years of directly relevant experience, then tune the text size and margins so it stays clean.
